The alternative protein sector has grown in recent years. Traditionally dominated by plants, fermented and cultured proteins are also recognized today as a key “technological pillar” in space, according to the Good Food Institute (GFI).

In 2020, fermentation companies raised $ 587 million and 13 new start-ups dedicated to using fermentation for alternative proteins, as well as new suppliers focused on alt protein ingredients derived from fermentation, launched. in space, the nonprofit noted in a recent report.

Actors working in the field of microbial fermentation include Quorn, the Israeli start-up Kinoko-Tech, and the American company Arbiom.

Today, a new start-up of proteins derived from fermentation is causing a stir… in alternative seafood. “Alternative seafood is still considered a nascent industry, with no major player”, explained Anne Palermo, co-founder and CEO of AquaCultured Foods during the Big Idea Ventures demo day, “making AquaCultured Foods on the verge of becoming a household name.” In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

“Plant-based seafood is a white space in the market”In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

AquaCultured Foods was born out of concern for the negative environmental impacts associated with today’s seafood industry.

“Currently, 90% of all wild fisheries are classified as overfished, leaving 170 countries with unmet demand for seafood. On top of that, global demand for seafood is expected to increase by 30%,” Palermo told delegates.

The start-up, which creates alternatives to whole-muscle seafood derived from fermentation, is targeting the global meat market of $ 2.7 billion. Of that, $ 216.9 billion comes from the global seafood market, bringing AquaCultured Foods’ “accessible market” to more than $ 2 billion, we were told.

“We are targeting a portion of the 126% annual growth in the chilled alternative protein space. Plant-based seafood is a white space in the market. In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

The solution, according to Palermo, is to bring whole pieces of seafood alternatives to the market – from shrimp and squid, to white fish and tuna.

“We do this through the fermentation process, where we are able to replicate the full muscle appearance, nutrition and texture of traditional seafood.” Palermo explained.

AcquaCultured Foods achieves this through its fermentation technology, for which it has three pending patents: one for the production method, another for its use in the food system, and the third for the strain of fungi itself.

The start-up claims its products are “nutritionally” compared to other seafood alternatives on the market because they are “grown and unprocessed,” meaning they retain all of the protein, fiber and natural micronutrients. “They are also familiar from the point of view of texture to traditional seafood”, added the CEO.

AquaCultured Foods plans to enter foodservice, foodservice and retail. “We will also be able to take advantage of important national partnership opportunities with a white label product. we have been told.

The start-up is currently raising $ 1.5 million, which would allow the launch of three to six SKUs in 1,000 stores, the roll-out of its popcorn shrimp products in the food service industry, and the completion of R&D on a new line of seafood. AquaCultured Foods is also looking to increase production and acquire “key hires”.

Mexican plant-based favoritesIn addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Elsewhere in the vegan sphere, entrepreneurs are working to recreate traditional regional specialties with plants, instead of meat.

Plant Ranch Foods, based in Los Angeles, is one such company. The start-up “fills a need” in the Mexican-flavored vegetable protein market, according to CEO Gary Huerta.

“Right now our competition is not really Mexican, nor does it offer the wide range of flavors and types of protein that you will find in the kitchens of Latin American families.” he told delegates at the Big Ideas Ventures event.

On the contrary, Huerta maintains that the food readily available in “Mexican” restaurants is not Mexican food at all, but “Mexican junk food”.

Plant Ranch’s solution is to provide “authentic, no-compromise Mexican options” that “look, chew and taste” like traditional Mexican dishes.

Products available include a vegan Al Pastor for use in tacos, burritos, tostadas, tortas, and stuffed peppers. Its ingredient list includes sietan, chipotle peppers, and vegan beef-flavored broth. The start-up has also developed alternatives to Pollo Asado and Carne Asada.

“Our Carnitas looks and tastes like slow roasted pork, and the other flavors are slow, simmered and complex sauces continuing traditional spices and recipes.” Huerta added. The company describes their process as ‘multi-step’, with flavors based on ‘family recipes that are generations old’. A provisional patent is filed for the technology.

Plant Ranch is currently available in 20 states in the United States. With additional funding, the start-up plans to expand its reach into retail and restaurant business. In the 12 months following his $ 2 million Series A round, he expects to hit $ 16 million in revenue.

“We will start testing more prepared foods, achieve national foodservice accounts, and ultimately launch new lines, including classic American and Italian flavor profiles,” Huerta said.

“Healthier” meat substitutesIn addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Another US-based start-up focuses on plant-based health – an industry that has been criticized for being “ultra-processed” and nutritionally inferior to its conventional counterpart.

“Plant-based doesn’t always mean healthy” said Samantha Edwards, Founder and CEO of New Breed Meats. “And more importantly for consumers, plant-based meats just don’t always taste good.”In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

New breed meats, on the other hand, are made from a new protein – a blend of pea protein and brown rice protein, with pea fiber, sunflower oil and starch. peas – which makes them “more nutritious” and “absolutely delicious”. The range includes a New Breed Burger and a New Breed Grounds, the latter of which can be used in tacos, lasagna, plant-based meatballs and pizza.

The start-up, which claims to be the only black and female-led producer of vegetable meats, targets two key market groups: African Americans (“The fastest growing herbal demographic in the United States”) And flexitarians – the biggest consumers of plant-based foods.

“These two groups combined represent more than 40% of the population”, Edward continued.

From a health perspective, the New Breed Meats line contains “up to 40% less ingredients” and contains “up to 75% less saturated fat,” which the CEO says means the start-up is “ready to win” against its competitors.

“We believe that there is a lot of room for us to play around and capture market share due to our delicious taste, our incredibly meaty texture, our unique positioning as a brand owned by women and men. Blacks, our healthier product mix and our true mission-oriented message. . ” In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

When it comes to routes to market, New Breed Meats targets both foodservice and retail. By 2022, the start-up plans to bring in $ 1.3 million. By the end of the fifth year, with the help of national distribution, it expects annual sales of $ 82 million.

The company is currently raising $ 1 million to “expand production, support sales and marketing, and drive distribution nationwide.”

DUBLIN, June 18, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The “Animal genetics market by products and services (live animals (poultry, pig, bovine, canine) Genetic material (semen (bovine, pig), embryo (bovine, equine)) Genetic tests (DNA tests, DNA typing, tests of genetic traits)) – Global forecasts until 2026 “ the report was added to ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.

The global animal genetics market is expected to reach $ 7.7 billion by 2026 from $ 5.5 billion in 2021, at a CAGR of 7.1% over the forecast period.

The growth of this market is driven by the increasing consumption of protein of animal origin, the growth of the world population and rapid urbanization, the increasing emphasis on the identification of superior breeds, the increased adoption of genetic services. to prevent genetic diseases and business losses; and increased adoption of advanced genetics technologies. On the other hand, the shortage of qualified professionals in veterinary research and the emergence of alternatives like laboratory meat are factors that are holding back the growth of the market.

Live animals accounted for the largest share of the animal genetics market in 2020.

On the basis of products and services, the animal genetics market has been segmented into live animals, genetic material, and animal genetic testing services. Factors attributable to the large income of the live animal segment include the high demand for live animals for breeding purposes. The introduction of disease resistant animals has further boosted the demand for live animals, as they are economically viable for owners and increase their profitability.

The market in Asia Pacific is expected to experience the highest growth rate during the forecast period (2021-2026).

Europe accounted for the largest share of the animal genetics market in 2020. Better accessibility to well-established technologies and distribution channels, increasing demand for feed products for livestock, high consumption of animal protein and increasing animal welfare activities in the developed countries of Europe and North America account for their larger market shares.

Social media has made it easier for consumers to hold companies and CEOs accountable for their actions, and that’s a good thing, Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted told CNBC’s Sara Eisen during CNBC Evolve Global Summit.

“I think the scrutiny of companies and CEOs is much more important today. I think part of it is that social media brings transparency and also a flow of information that doesn’t were never there before, ”Rorsted said. “It leads to change, accountability and transparency.”

This review will force the fashion industry, which produces 8-10% of global carbon emissions, to become environmentally friendly, Rorsted said.

“This is just the start, but the impact of plastic on our global environment is so negative. And as a company that stands up for something positive… we really want to make sure this issue is resolved,” said Rorsted. “It is so fundamental for companies to really help innovate and find solutions that respect the environment, without being disrupted for the future.”

Adidas has made strides in creating sustainable products, including using ocean plastics in its shoes and promising to make nine out of 10 products sustainable by 2025.

“I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way, but European companies – perhaps due to regulation – tend to be ahead,” Rorsted said. “We see ourselves as a leader in sustainability, but we actually welcome everyone who has taken a step forward.”

The company has partnered with Allbirds to create low-carbon footwear, in large part thanks to the rival shoemaker’s success in creating low-cost, sustainable products, which has been a challenge for Adidas. Allbirds uses materials such as merino wool, recycled bottles, and cardboard and castor oil to make their shoes.

“They did, did a great job on some innovative elements. We can bring the footwear expertise to that, which they probably had to a lesser extent,” Rorsted said. “Being successful in sustainability is more important than, you know, competing with each other.”

Later this summer, Adidas will launch their classic Stan Smith shoe using leather derived from mycelium, the fibrous structure of the mushroom root. The company predicts it will be very popular.

“We did a recent survey; 70% of our consumers prefer to buy sustainable products. So I think there will be a strong demand for this product,” Rorsted said.

No longer a buzzword on the sidelines, “ESG” is on the way to becoming mainstream. But what does this actually mean and why is ESG important? Dr Kaushik Sridhar explains.

What does it mean?

ESG refers to the environmental, social and governance practices of an investment that can have a significant impact on the performance of that investment.

The integration of ESG factors is used to improve traditional financial analysis by identifying potential risks and opportunities beyond technical assessments. Although there is an overlay of social consciousness, the primary focus of ESG valuation remains financial performance.

Companies operating in almost every industry are now under pressure to report on their ESG benchmarks and policies. ESG is sometimes used as a synonym for terms such as corporate social responsibility, responsible investing, and sustainable investing.

It is derived from the “triple bottom line,” also known as “people, planet and profits,” a concept introduced in the 1990s. He argued that companies should focus on each of the three Ps and not just on profits because they were just as important for any business venture to be sustainable. This concept has evolved into the objective of ESG, which is today the foundation of sustainable and responsible investment (SRI).

Buzzword to embed

ESG was considered a buzzword in 2019; the term is set to become mainstream in 2021.

Whether it’s the devastating impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Greta Thunberg’s crusade for action on climate change, or the new wave of green energy initiatives, environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues are hot topics.

The term ESG has been brewing for some time and is now spreading into the mainstream, driven by united demand from employees, investors and customers. All three groups appear to have moved from a passive position to an active position and are forcing companies to tackle climate change and social injustice.

As the pressure becomes explicit, companies respond with a change in operating principles, again proving the power of the conscious consumer in today’s marketplace.

The “E”

The impact of business practices on the environment has been in the headlines for years, especially when it comes to climate change and pollution. The environment appears to be more focused on ESG, as this is a generally broader area than social themes such as education and housing. When you think of the environment, it covers utilities, energy, and industry. This is a larger universe from which to build a viable investment strategy and also reflects the fact that there has been a lot of attention paid to environmental issues.

The”

This category covers community and employee relations, including human rights violations and discrimination, community impact and participation, treatment of employees, and occupational health and safety.

Another metric to determine if a company is a good “S” steward is to look for an engaged and happy workplace. Is the company a wanted employer? What kinds of policies and programs are in place to attract and retain workers? Companies that perform well on these issues have a competitive advantage over others. Studies show that satisfied workers tend to be more productive and efficient, which contributes to a company’s bottom line.

The G “

When analyzing environmental, social and governance factors, the “G” element is often overlooked amid considerations of climate risk, societal implications, and other “E” and “S” risks and opportunities. However, understanding governance risks and opportunities is essential in decision-making, as poor corporate governance practices have been at the heart of some of the biggest corporate scandals.

The Volkswagen emissions testing scandal, Facebook’s misuse of data and other recent incidents have caused significant financial damage to these companies. In the face of corporate missteps and growing awareness of global diversity and income inequality, corporate governance is an essential component of ESG.

Why is ESG important?

In the investment space, from large listed companies to private equity and other forms of private capital, investors demand that the companies they invest in take ESG into account and report on how they invest. do.

Proxy voting services now recommend voting against approving the accounts of listed companies that do not include a sustainability report or similar in their annual report and accounts. And in his letter to the CEO of January 2020, Larry Fink of BlackRock said they would not invest in companies that do not show progress in managing climate risks.

Currently, the “E” of climate change seems to be getting the most attention. The UK government is hosting the UN Climate Change Summit COP26 in Glasgow in November and its green finance strategy includes a requirement for all listed companies to disclose in accordance with the recommendations of the Working Group on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD ) by 2022.

Conclusion

ESG, and in particular ESG investing, can no longer be categorized as the future of investing. It is a reality today, just as issues such as climate change, cybersecurity, data protection, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and better stakeholder alignment are now widely recognized. as essential for better corporate citizenship and better social outcomes.

While we agree that practices such as greenwashing are deplorable, the point is that committed ESG asset managers – acting on behalf of investors who entrust us with the management of their capital – will play a critical role in addressing key challenges. environmental, social and governance issues that we face today.

ESG should be important to you because it is something that investors will demand now and in the future. They will also expect you to “practice the walk” as well as “speak for the sake”.

Two men have been charged with their alleged roles in an identity theft scam.

Ng Jee How, 46, and Chiw Meng Tong, 48, were each charged with helping another person retain the benefits of criminal behavior yesterday.

Ng, a Malaysian and Singaporean permanent resident, allegedly collected $ 230,000 from three people and remitted $ 209,000 of the sum to Chiw.

The latter deposited $ 18,600 of this sum in unknown accounts and gave $ 186,000 to an unknown person.

In a statement released Thursday, police said they received reports of five victims from July 18 to 29 last year.

The victims had handed over more than $ 1.5 million.

They were tricked into doing so by phone crooks claiming to be Chinese officials and accusing them of being involved in transnational money laundering crimes.

The victims said they handed over the money, believing it was to prove that their funds did not come from illegal activities.

Police investigations revealed that Ng and Chiw responded to a job offer on Facebook promising $ 300 for courier work.

The two followed instructions, raising around $ 230,000 from three of the five victims.

They allegedly handed over the money to strangers, receiving $ 15,700 in commission.

The commission was turned over to the police during investigations.

The two men are released on bail of $ 15,000 each, and their cases are scheduled to be heard again on July 9.

If found guilty, they can each be jailed for up to 10 years, or fined up to $ 500,000, or both.

Members of the public are urged by police to take the following precautions when receiving unsolicited calls asking them to part with their money:

1. Ignore calls and the caller’s instructions.

2. Understand that no local government agency will require payment through a phone call or social messaging platform, or require money to be handed over to strangers, or request personal banking information.

3. If they are not Singaporeans, check with their embassy or high commission to verify the appeal.

4. Call a friend or relative before making a decision.

Police added that the public should not collect money for foreigners, especially if they claim to be law enforcement officers.

Those with information relating to these scams or in doubt can call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit a report online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness

GBP / USD:

Monthly deadline:

(Technical change over this period is often limited, but serves as a guide for potential longer term moves)

The pendulum shifted in favor of buyers after rising 2.5% in December, causing major trendline resistance (2.1161). February then followed higher (1.7 percent).

The month of May, despite reduced volatility in March and April, traded well in the spotlight, up 2.8%. The month of June is however somewhat depressed (down 0.2%), although recording new peaks since the start of the year at 1.4250.

Despite the break in the trend line (which could serve as support in the event of a retest), primary the trend structure has declined since early 2008, uninterrupted (at current price) until 1.4376 gives way (April 2018 high).

Daily schedule:

Technical structure unchanged from the previous analysis.

Against the US dollar, the British pound finished in the spotlight on Thursday, following bullish inflation data from the US and recent comments from the ECB.

Quasimodo resistance at 1.4250 and support at 1.4003 remain key barriers on the daily chart.

Ask 1.3857-1.3940 — an important technical area where a decision was made to break above the resistance of 1,4003 – possibly is also on the radar.

Interestingly, the trend of this market has remained on the rise since March 2020.

Trendline support, drawn from the 36.14 low on the RSI, dropped its position last week with recent action cruising into the centerline range of 50.00.

Period H4:

Technical structure unchanged from the previous analysis.

Since mid-May, the H4 chart has been working to consolidate between 1.4096 and 1.4219. Despite a handful of whipsaws (counterfeits beyond the extremes of reach are common), the lineup remains intact. As the chart shows, Thursday, while cutting the low end of the aforementioned range, produced an almost one-sided rally to a high of 1.4178.

The technical structure above the consolidation has Quasimodo daily resistance starting at 1.4250 up; Below the range, the chart shows trendline support, drawn from 1.3668 low, and support valued at 1.4007.

Period H1:

Support at 1.4078 greeted the price movement on Thursday, after a quick push through offers at 1.41. Subsequent action saw GBP / USD recover to 1.41+ status and dethrone the 100-period simple moving average around 1.4148.

Despite moderate selling, as of this writing resistance could potentially form at 1.42, with a breakout revealing additional resistance at 1.4246.

The RSI image shows the value near the oversold range, in particular the resistance at 71.00ish.

Observed levels:

The H1-based figure of 1.42, fitting tightly with the top of the H4 range at 1.4219, forms a potential resistance. The caveat, of course, is a possible false signal formation to test Quasimodo’s daily resistance at 1.4250.

With the possibility of driving higher levels, another short-term scenario to consider is the first test of the 100-period simple moving average around 1.4148 and the move to 1.42.
